Hyperarc

2017

Hyperarc is a site-specific, hanging sculpture for Pratt Shows: Design 2017. The project draws its formal and tectonic inspiration from its site; the ARC building’s hyperbolic paraboloid roof system achieves complex surface curvature using linear wood beams and planar wood elements that are able to curve in one direction only, like plywood (or paper). When viewed at oblique angles, the roof’s profile appears to be an arc. Hyperarc is composed of 2,356 unique hand-painted, laser-cut watercolor paper components, each of which is only able to curve in one direction. The colored components are attached to their neighbors using 6,958 nylon snaps. In concert, the paper panels aggregate to describe a networked, porous form that achieves a higher order of surface curvature than its precedent, offering a curved profile from every vantage point.
